The Trust, registered in January 2006, is the culmination of work undertaken by the Town Hall Study Group, under the auspices of the Bakewell Community Interest Group, which explored in depth the recommendations of a consultant’s report on the future of Bakewell Town Hall. The Bakewell Town Council had previously looked into it’s disposal having recognised they were unable to meet refurbishment costs in order to bring the building to an acceptable standard.
The Study Group, made up of local residents who volunteered a wealth of experience and expertise, submitted a business plan to the Town Council in October 2005 which demonstrated that the Town Hall could be managed as a community enterprise with the benefit of charitable status.
The Town Council unanimously accepted in principle the Study Group’s proposals to proceed with the charitable trust and to provide some financial support to enable progress to be made. The Study Group set up working groups focussing on organisation and charitable status, building refurbishment, funding, business development and marketing. Their work continues.
The Bakewell Town and Community Trust was registered as a company limited by guarantee on 25th January 2006 and received charitable status on 7th April 2006. The objects of the Trust are:
- To preserve and restore for the benefit of the Public the Bakewell Town Hall, being of constructional, architectural or historical heritage.
- To advance education and to provide or assist in the provision of facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals and community groups who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity, or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life.
- To promote other such charitable purpose for the general benefit of the Public Residents of Bakewell and the surrounding area.
The date to day activities of the Trust are managed by a Board of five Directors who jointly serve as Trustees of the Charity. The Trust has negotiated a 40-year lease on the building from the Town Council and expects to take over responsibility for it in the near future.
